Chevron collaborates with AWS re/Start to empower underprivileged individuals on cloud computing

Late last year, Chevron Philippines Inc., marketer of the Caltex brand of fuel and lubricants, partnered with Edukasyon.ph to launch a program focused on providing digital training for underprivileged youths on cloud computing skills under the AWS re/Start program.

A batch of 48 scholars funded by Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI) recently graduated after completing training under the Amazon Web Services (AWS) re/Start program, in the high-growth field of cloud computing.

Late last year, Chevron Philippines Inc., marketer of the Caltex brand of fuel and lubricants, partnered with Edukasyon.ph to launch a program focused on providing digital training for underprivileged youths on cloud computing skills under the AWS re/Start program.

Edukasyon.ph is a social enterprise that utilizes online platforms to connect learners with educational opportunities and foster career awareness. CPI is offering support to aspiring professionals, especially underprivileged youth, and equipping them with the skills and knowledge in Cloud Foundations, Linux, Cloud Adoption Framework, Databases and Networking, and soft skills.

This is the first time that Chevron, known for its award-winning learning programs such as the Caltex Mentor Program and Fuel your School, will be throwing its support for cloud computing skills.

Out of 50 qualified scholars selected by Edukasyon.ph from all over the country, 48 scholars successfully graduated from the program. All scholars met face to face for the first time and celebrated their graduation after passing with flying colors. Graduates of the program will acquire the technical skills for designing, managing, and optimizing cloud infrastructures which is growing in demand among employers.

In the case of Kymberlyn Valbuena, the top-notcher among the graduating batch; her experience with AWS re/Start shows the life-changing power of accessible and inclusive education. Initially, she feared that her background may disqualify her for the program. She was surprised to learn of the program’s openness, diversity, its well-structured curriculum, and hands-on laboratory and lessons. Through the support of CPI and AWS re/Start, Kymberlyn rose beyond her anxieties and emerged top learner. 

“When I saw the program on social media, I immediately applied though I wasn’t sure if I was qualified. If you are having doubts, I would like to encourage you just to try [AWS re/Start] because it is open for everyone regardless of their background,” said Kymberlyn.

“I truly appreciate and value the program sponsored by Chevron. I did not only gain technology knowledge but also personal skills such as communicating and socializing with other people,” she added.

“The AWS re/Start program is Chevron’s first social investment (SI) program in the digital sphere, and it fills us with much pride to see our dear scholars break boundaries and thrive in the field of technology. Our scholars’ unwavering resolve and talent in cloud computing will undoubtedly take them to great places. It truly goes to show how far determination and proper support can get you,” Raissa Bautista, Chevron senior corporate affairs advisor.

The AWS re/Start program is offered at no cost to the learners and a technology background is not required to apply. After completing their three months training, the learners validate their skills through the AWS Cloud Practitioner certification exam. Post certification, they were introduced to 15+ hiring partners who conducted job interviews for these graduates.
