Caltex offers motorists tips on how to keep water out of their fuel tank

Caltex Philippines is offering drivers a quick checklist to help protect their vehicles from water contamination whenever wet weather and flooding occur.

In a country where sudden downpours, monsoon surges, and typhoons can bring rain and flooding at different times of the year, motorists face a recurring but often overlooked risk: water finding its way into the fuel tank, where it can contaminate fuel and gradually affect engine performance.
Caltex Philippines is offering drivers a quick checklist to help protect their vehicles from water contamination whenever wet weather and flooding occur.
Here is how to keep water out of your fuel tank during the rainy season:
  • Inspect your fuel cap for cracks or signs of wear and ensure it is securely closed after every refueling.
  • Clear dirt, leaves, and other debris from around the fuel filler so rainwater drains away instead of pooling near the cap.
  • Park your vehicle under cover during heavy rain or flooding, and hold off refueling after heavy downpours, especially in flood-prone areas since rainwater can seep into the station’s fuel storage and dispensing equipment.
  • Keep your tank reasonably full to lessen the air space and help reduce condensation forming inside the tank.
  • If you frequently drive through flood-prone areas, consult your vehicle manufacturer or trusted mechanic for added precautions specific to your vehicle.
Fuel quality matters too. Caltex fuels contain Techron, an active cleaning ingredient, which removes existing deposits and prevents new ones from forming resulting in a cleaner engine and reliable performance even in wet conditions.
Signs water may have already gotten into your tank
Even with precautions, it’s worth knowing the warning signs. Water in the fuel system often shows up as:
  • Your car feels shaky when driving, especially at lower speeds
  • Difficulty starting the engine, or the car stalling shortly after it starts
  • The car may feel sluggish or less responsive, even when driving on flat roads
  • The car may produce rougher-than-usual exhaust and unusual engine noises, particularly after driving in heavy rain or wet conditions.
If several of these symptoms show up together, especially after driving through heavy rain or flooding, it’s best to have the fuel system checked by your mechanic before continuing to drive. Catching water contamination early can prevent more costly damage to the engine down the line.
“Rainy season driving can put extra strain on a vehicle’s fuel system, and it’s something a lot of motorists don’t think about until it becomes a problem,” said Caltex Philippines General Manager and Country Chairman Pongtorn “Bon” Tangmanuswong.  “Our fuels are engineered to protect engines from deposit buildup, with strict quality controls ensuring water-free fuel. Our station teams are all ready to help with maintenance checks or any emergencies so drivers can enjoy their journey, rain or shine.
Motorists can drop by any Caltex station with autoPro for a fuel cap and filler check as part of their rainy-season maintenance routine.
