Here’s an FYI: nubia, a brand of ZTE Mobile Devices, may be a niche player in the global smartphone market, focusing on gaming and photography-focused smartphones, but it has been growing continuously – i.e. its Neo series experienced over 300% growth in H1 2025, and it holds a 39% share in the specialized gaming segment.
And then you come across the nubia V80 Max, and you sort of understand why…
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Out of the box, the nubia V80 Max looks… big, with its 6.9-inch HD+ screen. It is fortunate, nonetheless, that this unit is actually light; meaning, holding this somewhat thin unit won’t tire your hand that easily.
One thing I noticed is the unit’s seemingly “boxy” design, although – fortunately – its edges aren’t disturbingly squarish. This helps in the comfy gripping of nubia V80 Max.
All the buttons are where they’re supposed to be – e.g. power button that’s also a fingerprint scanner at the right side, along with the volume control buttons; and nano-SIM and memory card tray is at the left side. A must-mention is the .5mm headphone port at the bottom of the unit, emphasizing the return of the wired accessories.
Oh… this needs mentioning: We got the “Sky Cyan” color variant (which is, basically, baby blue), and it looks… fresh, even if the front screen can be a handprint magnet.
POWER UP
Setting up the nubia V80 Max was fast – i.e. it didn’t take that long from the power on to the set-up completion. Aside from processor (Unisoc T7250 Octa-Core, 1.8GHz), this may also be because the setting up was truncated (that it, there weren’t too many “question” asked). OOTB, you get MyOS 16 based on Android W as OS.
When turned on, among the first thing you’d notice is the brightness of the unit. You can change this in the setting, obviously; but upon start, the glare is noticeable.
Another thing noticed: The phone’s lower part bezel is somewhat thick; it was, at least, noticeable when we turned on the phone, and then just forgotten when we started using already
I didn’t notice lags while navigating the phone, so it helps that the units as 16 (8+8)GB RAM + 128GB ROM.
Now… closing in on what you see onscreen, it’s good to emphasize that the screen was crisp (1640×720), so that details were apparent/not pixelated. Indeed: Just because this one’s affordable doesn’t mean you are stuck with something cheap-looking/performing.
CAM POWER
With nubia V80 Max, you get:
- Rear Cameras: 50MP AI triple camera
- Front Camera: 16MP front-facing camera
And, to be expected in gadgets now, there are must-check features, some using AI – e.g. Gesture Snap (V-sign or open palm for selfies), Dynamic Image for capturing motion, and AI Filters for various scenes.
Truth be told, the pics we took were:
- Crisp – i.e. the details were “there”, such as the grime on the photo we took of a wall with graffiti;
- Not kalat ang color… particularly outdoor, as well as when shots are close-up – e.g. we took shots of a basketball court turned into some sort of bodega in Palanan in Makati City, and the capturing of what we saw was precise; and pics of veggies in Palanan market were (similarly) precise
- Graininess was noticeable in long shots in darker areas – e.g. a photo of the inside of Palanan market showed obvious graininess
- Depth of field worked – e.g. we took shots of packed tuyo (dried fish) in Palanan market, and, yes, they worked as required
The pics, particularly those taken in brighter areas while using the 50MP or the AI cam capability, were close to what were seen with the naked eye. That, I suppose, says a lot about this cam… no matter the other limitations.
BATTERY LIFE
nubia V80 Max has power – that is, while too many units (even from high-end brands) are still stuck with offering 6000mAh, this one has 6000mAh with AI power-saving, bypass charging, AI night charging. In battery power talk, this will sustain you for days.
IN THE END…
If you’re looking for an affordable smartphone that won’t embarrass you, I say give nubia V80 Max a chance to be checked. It does look sleek. And yeah, even if it’s in the under-₱7,000 range, it has admirable features. So, who knows, you may just like it. So give this a go-through.
