Retro feels thanks to the nubia Music Pro

Here’s a quick (design-centric) look at nubia Music Pro.

Here’s the thing with unboxing gadgets: you (usually) have to reserve your judgments until after you have turned on the gadgets because, TBH, you won’t be able to see how good (or bad) any unit is until it is turned on and, yes, until you’ve checked how it functions. But now and then, a gadget comes along that is so catchy it makes you want to consider grabbing one… now na.

That’s the thought that came to mind after seeing nubia Music Pro, described as “a music-centric smartphone built for true audio lovers” as it comes in a “vinyl-inspired design” that’s “crafted to stand out in both sound and style”.

This is just the unboxing (a more extensive review will be done later, so just you wait for that, too), but here are some observations:

  • nubia is stepping up in its packaging. In the case of nubia Music Pro, you get a bigger-than-usual package with two boxes, one containing the phone and basic accessories, and the other containing even more accessories.
  • Accessories include the charger and free case (contained with the phone in one of the boxes), though also an extra plastic case and mini speaker in the other box; meaning, if the 2.1-channel audio system that has three full-range speakers won’t satisfy you, you have this as back-up.
  • The unit itself comes overly-wrapped in plastic. But when that is removed, you then see the blast-from-the-past inspiration. Think Pop Art, like the works of Roy Lichtenstein, and you get what this unit is going for. It is loud, yet classy. It is retro, yet somehow current. It has personality, that’s for sure.
  • nubia Music Pro is 6.7-inch big, so it’s at par with most units out in the market now.
  • The sides have the usual buttons – e.g. volume buttons and fingerprint sensor embedded in the power button at the right side; and SIM card holders and microSDXC card slot at the left side; and charging port, 3.5mm jack and mic at the bottom.
  • The phone isn’t THAT light you’d question its integrity for being plasticky; nor too heavy at 202 grams you’d suffer when handling with one hand for a long period of time.
  • But again, it’s the retro design that immediately captures the attention. Meaning, if you’re into Pop Art, then this one definitely is worth checking out. And that’s a good way to call attention in this already-saturated smartphone market, no?
