REVIEW: The smart value of nubia V80 Design

Checking out the nubia V80 Design.

How many times have we heard about the “saturation” of the smartphone market? That because just about everyone is already gadget-ed, the demand is (or, supposedly, has been) waning. In 2023, for instance, the Philippines smartphone market declined by 8.6%. But then in 2024, recovery was noted, with the global smartphone sell-through growing by 4% YoY.

Among the reasons of that rebound is the availability of affordable tech-laden offerings that make buying newer smartphones not that burdensome.

And here, the nubia V80 Design comes to mind.

FIRST IMPRESSION

The nubia V80 Design is, to start, quite light; that’s the first thing I noted when I took it out of its box. This is particularly noteworthy since you get a 6.75-inch unit that’s 7.7mm thick.

The unit’s buttons are where you expect them to be. The bottom has the 3.5mm headphone jack, USB Type-C port, and microphones for calls and recording. The sides have the SIM and microSD containers, power button, fingerprint sensor, and volume buttons.

In front, the screen has the punch-hole front camera. And at the back, there’s a triple-camera layout.

Setting up was breezy, from the first time the unit was turned on to being able to use it. That’s always a plus in this time-deprived era.

nubia V80 Design has a smooth 120Hz display, so you don’t see pixelation onscreen. Meaning, you get crisp details of what’s onscreen. Not only is this essential, but this is also elevates the under experience considering this is an under- ₱7,300 unit.

It runs on MyOS 16 (based on Android W), which is clean and, yeah, intuitive. Add the Unisoc T7280 processor that helped with multitasking… though temper the expectations with opening too many apps at the same time (particularly if including gaming).

Sound-wise, this isn’t tunog lata (no tin sound). So even if it’s not radio quality, it suffices when listening to music or playing movies or doing similar stuff.

CAM CONCERNS

Okay… all smartphones are no longer just for calling and/or texting. They’re veritable cameras now, too. And, sadly, I have some issues (even if they may be considered as small) with the cams of nubia V80 Design.

To elaborate:

  1. The photos aren’t bad, BAD. Particularly if you don’t mind using filters (like when uploading in Instagram or something), then you get okay shots with nubia V80 Design.
  2. Pics with depth of field are actually good; those in the foreground are clear, and the background unclear, just as they should be.
  3. The details, though, aren’t always… detailed. This is particularly true with long shots.
  4. And the color was… maputla (pale). Which, again, you can fix via filters (though I’m still mentioning here anyway).

POWER ON

This unit boasts a 5,000mAh (milliampere-hour) battery, so this should last you for a day or two per charge.

IN THE END…

The nubia V80 Design is a can-afford option for those wanting to buy a newer unit, or a second unit for that matter. There are many others in the market now, indeed, but this one can compete with those in its price range. As such, it’s worth checking out (if not actually being considered).
