As digital finance moves more decisions into real time, financial institutions\u00a0need to match that speed\u00a0with disciplined risk management\u2014from credit assessment and identity verification to fraud detection and ongoing monitoring, Maya said at the World\u00a0Financial\u00a0Innovation\u00a0Series (WFIS)\u00a0Philippines 2026.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The message came as\u00a0Julie\u00a0Reyes, Maya\u00a0Chief\u00a0Risk and\u00a0Compliance\u00a0Officer, was named Governance,\u00a0Risk and\u00a0Compliance (GRC)\u00a0Advocate of the Year at the\u00a0WFIS\u00a0Philippines Awards 2026. This is her second win in the category, after receiving the same recognition in 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cDigital finance should be fast, but speed has to be matched by sound judgment, clear guardrails and accountability,\u201d Reyes said. \u201cRisk and compliance should help the business make better decisions as products and services are developed\u2014not appear only at the end.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reyes was cited for championing the One Maya Governance Framework, an innovative approach that aligns risk standards, controls, escalation paths and oversight across Maya\u2019s banking and payments businesses. Maya Bank and Maya Philippines\u00a0remain\u00a0separately governed, with their respective licenses, board\u00a0accountabilities\u00a0and regulatory and compliance responsibilities.<\/p>\n

Under the framework, risk and compliance work with business, technology and operations as decisions are made. It also allows risk\u00a0expertise\u00a0to inform credit assessment, fraud\u00a0management\u00a0and customer protection across the ecosystem, while the respective accountabilities of each regulated entity remain clear.<\/p>\n

For fraud and financial crime, Maya uses real-time and AI-assisted capabilities to detect suspicious patterns and support investigations. Controls extend throughout the customer relationship, covering onboarding, authentication, account recovery, profile\u00a0changes\u00a0and transaction monitoring.<\/p>\n

Speaking on a\u00a0WFIS\u00a0panel, Reyes cited increasingly sophisticated forms of impersonation and identity fraud, including deepfakes, as an emerging concern across the financial sector. She said financial institutions need layered, risk-based controls throughout the customer relationship, along with closer coordination among financial institutions, telecommunications companies, technology\u00a0platforms\u00a0and authorities.<\/p>\n

The discussion\u00a0came as the financial sector continues to implement the Anti-Financial Account Scamming Act and related\u00a0Bangko\u00a0Sentral ng Pilipinas rules, including Circular No. 1213, which strengthened requirements for fraud monitoring,\u00a0authentication\u00a0and account protection.<\/p>\n

\u201cStrong risk management is a shared responsibility,\u201d Reyes said. \u201cThis recognition reflects the work of teams across Maya who make careful decisions every day and continue strengthening how we protect customers and support responsible growth.\u201d<\/p>\n
