{"id":6849,"date":"2014-11-10T13:18:19","date_gmt":"2014-11-10T05:18:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/?p=6849"},"modified":"2014-11-10T13:19:01","modified_gmt":"2014-11-10T05:19:01","slug":"ibm-promotes-development-environment-bluemix-students-developers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/2014\/11\/10\/ibm-promotes-development-environment-bluemix-students-developers\/","title":{"rendered":"IBM promotes Bluemix to students and developers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IBM recently hosted a series of enablement sessions for students and faculty from the country\u2019s leading universities to introduce the company\u2019s latest Cloud offering, Bluemix.<\/p>\n<p>Bluemix is a platform as a service (PaaS) offering based on the Cloud Foundry open source project that promises to deliver enterprise-level features and services that are easy to integrate into cloud applications.<\/p>\n<p>The sessions which ran for a period of two months, and participated in by ten schools, culminated on September 18, 2014 with the Bluemix Challenge Finals held at the IBM Innovation Center in Commonwealth, Quezon City.<\/p>\n<p>In the Bluemix Challenge, schools were asked to develop applications aimed at solving specific problems that may have commercial or societal impact.\u00a0 The submitted Bluemix Apps were evaluated based on their effectiveness in solving the problem, significance, the innovative use of Bluemix services and design\/aesthetics.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6850\" style=\"width: 604px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/BlueMix-participants.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6850\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6850\" src=\"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/BlueMix-participants.png\" alt=\"Participants of the IBM Bluemix Challenge\" width=\"594\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/BlueMix-participants.png 594w, http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/BlueMix-participants-300x201.png 300w, http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/BlueMix-participants-84x55.png 84w, http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/BlueMix-participants-420x283.png 420w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6850\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong><em>Participants of the IBM Bluemix Challenge<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the final round, the top five teams were given a problem on the spot that may be solved through an application that they developed in Bluemix.\u00a0 They were given five hours to develop their application.\u00a0 The applications were presented during the Bluemix Fair to a panel of IT experts who evaluated their applications based on effectiveness in solving the problem, use of Bluemix services, design\/aesthetics, and presentation.<\/p>\n<p>De La Salle University team (Fritz Kevin Flores, Joshua Jorel Lee, Faculty Coach: Katrina Solomon) won the challenge, with their Bluemix App, \u201cMetro Watch\u201d, which allows citizens to report problems such as potholes, illegal terminals, broken street lamps, among others, that commonly impede smooth and safe traffic\u00a0 across the Metropolis.\u00a0 Metro Watch is composed of two modules: administration and reporting.\u00a0 The administration module provides officials with both a summarized and detailed view of the problems reported by their constituents.\u00a0 The module is written in PHP and uses the MySQL service available in Bluemix.\u00a0 The reporting module is a mobile application that provides constituents an interface to report problems.\u00a0 This module is developed using RapidApps.\u00a0 RapidApps is a Bluemix service that allows programmers to quickly develop data-centric web and mobile apps using visual tools &#8211;
