The number of\u00a0medals\u00a0that the Philippines\u00a0had\u00a0won\u00a0from\u00a0various\u00a0international science, technology, engineering, and mathematics\u00a0(STEM)\u00a0competitions\u00a0has once again skyrocketed\u00a0this\u00a02023, setting\u00a0a\u00a0new\u00a0mark\u00a0in\u00a0the country\u2019s\u00a0history\u00a0of Youth Excellence in Science (YES) Awards.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of\u00a02,114\u00a0young Filipino geniuses from various regions in the country were conferred the\u00a0award \u2013 surpassing the\u00a0previous\u00a0mark of\u00a01,802\u00a0awardees recorded in\u00a02022, having\u00a0an impressive increment of\u00a017.31%\u00a0from\u00a0the latter\u00a0year\u2019s already historic number.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the first time in the recognition program\u2019s history that the number of YES awardees reached over 2,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the Department of Science and Technology \u2013 Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) first started recognizing the victories of young Filipino students who engaged and bagged medals in various international science and math competitions, there were only less than 100 awardees. Sixteenyears later, the DOST-SEI continues this healthy tradition of gratitude and lauds another batch of YES medalists who set a whole new record of excellence in the international STEM scene. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following are the numbers of awardees per region: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

National Capital Region \u2013 1,012 awardees 
CALABARZON \u2013 203 awardees 
Central Luzon \u2013 147 awardees 
Bicol Region \u2013 110 awardees 
Ilocos Region \u2013 86 awardees 
Western Visayas \u2013 79 awardees 
Eastern Visayas \u2013 78 awardees 
Northern Mindanao \u2013 73 awardees 
Zamboanga Peninsula \u2013 68 awardees 
Central Visayas \u2013 58 awardees 
Davao Region \u2013 47 awardees 
Cagayan Valley \u2013 41 awardees 
CARAGA \u2013 38 awardees 
SOCCSKSARGEN \u2013 29 awardees 
Cordillera Administrative Region \u2013 24 awardees 
MIMAROPA \u2013 21 awardees <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The students were given YES medals, a DOST institutional award for the exemplary achievement of the youth in international STEM competitions. It is a medal of distinction awarded by the DOST Secretary or the DOST Regional Director to deserving Filipino students,which signifies DOST\u2019s high regard for excellence and competitiveness in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All these were in full display during the 2023 YES Awards Ceremony. Taking off as part of the 2023 National Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (NSTIW), the ceremony was held on November 22, 2023 at the Iloilo Convention Center in Iloilo City \u2013 the first time the annual celebration was hosted outside Metro Manila. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event gathered the outstanding young Filipino talents in the Western Visayas region whose commitment, dedication, and hard work continuously push the frontiers of excellence, unceasingly challenging possibilities and overcoming barriers on the international stage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joining the celebration were the awardees\u2019 parents and guardians, members of the science community and the academe, and the Institute\u2019s valued partners from local STEM competitions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum gave a heartwarming message for the region\u2019s YES Awardees, congratulating and thanking them for representing the Filipinos well in the international stage and for being the pride of the country in various STEM competitions. He urged the awardees to carry on the Department\u2019s shared aspirations and to continue the pursuit of STEM knowledge as exemplars of honor and excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn whatever you do, do not forget that the real essence of excellence is not based on recognition and merits alone; but rather on what you make use of it. May your successes always lead you to the path of compassion\u00a0and\u00a0empower you to uplift the lives of the Filipino people by taking the helm of research and development,\u201d\u00a0said Dr. Solidum.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DOST-SEI Director Dr. Josette T. Biyo also thanked the students for bringing honor and inspiration to the youth, and expressed hope that the medal given to them further motivates them to dream big but also humbles them to strive to serve the country and become the nation\u2019s future great scientists and mathematicians.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMay this day encourage you to become like the veterans in science that you idolize \u2013 willing to share their gift of knowledge and open to train and shape the next generations for a more innovative and technologically-advanced future,\u201d\u00a0Dr. Biyo\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DOST VI Regional Director Engr. Rowen Gelonga also graced the event and thanked the DOST-SEI for their hard work and enthusiasm to create initiatives that champion and recognize the youth\u2019s innate potential in the fields of STEM.He expressed hope that the YES awardees will carry on the drive they have acquired during their competitions and use it as key to become the future advocates for STEM in their region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou are the future of your community, your region, and your country. May the medals given to you\u00a0fuel your\u00a0thirst and hunger\u00a0to conquer your fears and strive for even greater heights,\u201d said Engr.\u00a0Gelonga.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sharing some of the things she has learned throughout her journey as a kid who loves joining competitions, Reysheil Anne B. Doromal, one of the 2023 YES awardees, addressed her fellow YES medalists by encouragingthem to continue to be passionate on the things they are passionate about, no matter how difficult it is to balance life.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0a hard life that, despite us choosing it, makes us prone to burnout. For this, I can say: know yourself and know your priorities. By priorities, I mean not just rearranging your schedule, but taking the time to sit down and think about what truly matters to you. Think about why you do the things that you do,\u201d\u00a0said Reysheil.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reysheil also highlighted that true passion means a willingness to learn from the mistakes people make, while also recognizing the need to appreciate the small wins and enjoy the process in its entirety rather than the end goal alone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
