{"id":58696,"date":"2023-09-23T18:23:13","date_gmt":"2023-09-23T10:23:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/?p=58696"},"modified":"2023-09-23T18:23:16","modified_gmt":"2023-09-23T10:23:16","slug":"ofw-remittances-from-us-boost-ph-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/2023\/09\/23\/ofw-remittances-from-us-boost-ph-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"OFW remittances from US boost PH economy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Remittances from overseas foreign workers (OFWs) \u2013 particularly healthcare professionals \u2013 significantly stimulate the Philippines\u2019 economic growth and development, a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/669765966\/Philippines-Remittances-Economic-Analysis\">research study<\/a> finds.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Economist Alyssa Nu\u00f1ez of the University of Asia and the Pacific conducted the study, which comes as the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bworldonline.com\/top-stories\/2023\/08\/16\/539833\/june-remittances-hit-6-month-high\/\">reported<\/a> that monthly cash remittances reached a six-month high, rising 2.1 percent from one year ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Nu\u00f1ez, it is clear that remittances from OFWs in the U.S.\u2014specifically those working in the healthcare sector\u2014are incredibly important to the wellbeing of individuals and families in the Philippines, as well as the growth and stability of the nation\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remittances have played an increasingly significant role in the Philippine economy. Remittances to the Philippines totaled USD 31.19 billion, or 9.2 percent of the Philippine GDP, in 2020. By way of comparison, total remittances to the Philippines were USD 10.7 billion in 2005, and only USD 290.8 million in 1978.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the study\u2019s findings is that the U.S. is by far the largest source of remittances to the Philippines, accounting for nearly 41 percent of all remittances sent to the country in 2021. The next closest country accounted for only 7 percent of remittances to the Philippines that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study affirms that remittances provide stable support for the household consumption of essential goods, help alleviate poverty, and increase savings and investments.
