Amidst the global health\u00a0issue\u00a0and\u00a0social\u00a0challenges,\u00a0young Filipino innovators\u00a0continue to become bearers of hope\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0country.\u00a0This was on full display during the 5th<\/sup>\u00a0imake.wemake: create.\u00a0innovate.\u00a0collaborate..\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0Department of Science and Technology \u2013 Science Education Institute\u00a0(DOST-SEI)\u00a0bestowed\u00a0the coveted Youth Innovation Prize (YIP) Award\u00a0to three school-teams\u00a0for their\u00a0creative solutions\u00a0for\u00a0eye disease detection,\u00a0monitoring and conservation\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0haribon<\/em>\u00a0or the Philippine Eagle,\u00a0and\u00a0aerial\u00a0emergency\u00a0aid for isolated areas.\u00a0These projects emerged as winners for their technology\u2019s novelty, functionality, patentability, extensibility and practicability.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Youth Innovation Prize Award<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first YIP winner is Bansud National High School \u2013 Regional Science High School for MIMAROPA for their project \u201cSINAGTALA: Automated Detection Kit for Selected Eye Diseases Using Ensemble Framework of Deep Learning Neural Networks (CNN x ANN)\u201d. The project focused on automatically detecting certain selected eye diseases using convolutional (CNN) and artificial (ANN) Neural Networks to address the need for a medical screening device to promote high-quality and accessible eye care interventions, particularly for diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and cataract. The team is composed of Franklin Razon, Jarell Aldrix Famadico, Josh Vincent Sario, and Sophia Margaux Dilodilo, with Alexis Albo as their coach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Philippine Science High School\u00a0(PSHS)\u00a0\u2013 CALABARZON Region Campus\u00a0also received the YIP award for their\u00a0\u201cDeep Neural Network Embedded on a Microcontroller for Detection of the Bird call and songs of the Philippine Eagle\u00a0Pithecophaga\u00a0jefferyi\u201d\u00a0<\/em>project.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, they\u00a0showcased a\u00a0system wherein an Embedded Deep Neural Network programmed to a microcontroller with an external microphone captures\u00a0calls\u00a0of the Philippine Eagle\u00a0helping\u00a0bantay-gubat<\/em>\u00a0and bird trackers\u00a0by\u00a0determining\u00a0and understanding\u00a0calls made by the\u00a0Pithecophaga\u00a0jefferyi<\/em>\u00a0in their natural habitat.\u00a0The team is composed of Amina Javellana, Alexander\u00a0Ba\u00f1ados, Lance\u00a0Alilio,\u00a0and\u00a0Weinfree\u00a0Saludares,\u00a0with coach John-Niel\u00a0Masong.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cProject Kidlat: Inter-Island Automated UAV for Medical Delivery and Emergency Response\u201d of Ramon Teves Pastor Memorial \u2013 Dumaguete Science High School likewise secured the YIP for their innovation addressing the difficulty of delivering medical and emergency aid to isolated places. Project Kidlat is capable of crossing seas and assisting in medical response and disaster by carrying supplies needed in remote areas. Project Kidlat is crafted by team members Mondrayneil Sarte, Marvin Nillas, John Raymond Enolpe and Kristine Mae Tilos, with coach Ivan Jayson Macabenta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the win, the school-teams each received Php 200,000.00 cash prize along with the YIP trophy.  The winners were determined based on scores of the Board of Judges composed of Engr. Percival Magpantay from the University of the Philippines Diliman, Engr. Carlos Matti Opus of the Ateneo de Manila University, and Engr. Edison Roxas from the University of Santo Tomas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Young Scientist Award<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

DOST-SEI’s partner, the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation (GBF), also conferred three students with the Young Scientist Award (YSA). Winning this award are Alexander A. Ba\u00f1ados and Amina M. Javellana of the PSHS CALABARZON Region Campus, and John Raymond P. Enolpe of Ramon Teves Pastor Memorial – Dumaguete Science High School. They were given the \u201cSTEM Scholarship for Excellence\u201d for demonstrating global competence through their innovations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The GBF scholarship\u00a0allows\u00a0them\u00a0to\u00a0pursue a STEM course of their choice at any\u00a0university or college in the country.\u00a0Ms.\u00a0Grace Colet, GBF\u2019s Executive\u00a0Director,\u00a0led the announcement of their new scholars.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOriginally, we planned to select just two scholars,\u00a0but after\u00a0watching and listening throughout\u00a0the final presentations,\u00a0we\u00a0decided to add another recipient due to the quality of work they all have done,\u201d Colet bared.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr. graced the hybrid event and congratulated all the winners and participants for their creativity and thanked them for striving to create positive impacts needed to solve the problems of today and of the future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMore than declaring winners for the Youth Innovation Prizes and the GBF Young Scientist Awardees, what matters most to us is to have successfully convened budding makers with great mentors, advisers, and of course, people from the government and private sectors, as all of us are stakeholders in the innovation process,\u201d said Secretary Solidum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DOST Secretary also led the announcement of the opening of the 6th imake.wemake competition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

DOST-SEI Director Dr. Josette Biyo also congratulated all the winners and urged them to pursue STEM courses and avail of the Institute\u2019s undergraduate scholarships.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
