{"id":40230,"date":"2020-10-08T09:36:04","date_gmt":"2020-10-08T01:36:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/?p=40230"},"modified":"2020-10-08T09:36:05","modified_gmt":"2020-10-08T01:36:05","slug":"broadband-forum-finalizes-specifications-to-increase-broadband-network-gateway-scalability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/2020\/10\/08\/broadband-forum-finalizes-specifications-to-increase-broadband-network-gateway-scalability\/","title":{"rendered":"Broadband Forum finalizes specifications to increase Broadband Network Gateway scalability"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Operators\u00a0facing\u00a0increasing bandwidth demands\u00a0will be able to increase the scalability of their networks in a more flexible way from today, as\u00a0Broadband Forum\u00a0completed its specifications for\u00a0Broadband Network Gateway (BNG) disaggregation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With video and broadband consumption continuing to grow,\u00a0Broadband Forum\u2019s\u00a0\u201cControl and User Plane Separation for a Disaggregated BNG\u201d (TR-459)\u00a0addresses the increasing\u00a0bandwidth\u00a0demands being placed on BNGs\u00a0and the challenges in control plane and user plane scaling.\u00a0The architecture\u00a0also reduces\u00a0time to market\u00a0for\u00a0new services\u00a0and increases\u00a0service resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, it&nbsp;significantly simplifies&nbsp;network operation by drastically reducing the number of management points.&nbsp;Disaggregated BNG User Plane deployments can be scaled to match subscribers\u2019 broadband demand and then be managed by a control plane instance in a centralized location.&nbsp;This brings benefits such as reduced operational expenditure (OPEX) for operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOver the years, BNGs have had to evolve to support new functionalities such as management of multiple types of accesses, transport encapsulations and customers,\u201d&nbsp;said&nbsp;Broadband Forum CEO Robin Mersh.&nbsp;\u201cBroadband Forum\u2019s work responds to the changing ecosystem and ensures flexible scalability through an&nbsp;agile architecture&nbsp;constructed to meet operators\u2019 needs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defining the architecture and requirements for&nbsp;a disaggregated BNG control plane and user plane, TR-459 separates the control plane and data plane.&nbsp;The work will enable the control plane and user plane to be easily scaled&nbsp;independently&nbsp;according to&nbsp;what is needed for new services and additional customers.&nbsp;This&nbsp;will&nbsp;also bring benefits such as centralized locations for configuration and IP address management, leading to easier operations and faster delivery of new services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Geographical-related challenges such as fragmented IP pool management, under-utilized control plane and complex operation and management for software upgrades and service provisioning are also addressed by the specification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOperators have previously suffered from very limited choice when addressing subscriber growth or bandwidth demand. The most common approach has always been to add more BNGs into the network,\u201d said Kenneth Wan, Senior Product Manager at Nokia. \u201cThe Disaggregated BNG changes this. It not only offers flexible user and control plane scaling but ensures operational simplicity by using a single control plane function to manage multiple instances of user plane.
