\u201cIn today’s digital shift, decision-makers are now taking on steps to embark on a cloud adoption journey,\u201d said Mauch Franco, group head for cloud, online and data center services at MIS & IT Group. \u201cOrganizations believe cloud can help them thrive in the ever-changing digital environment as they seek new revenue streams and business models. With cloud, businesses can deliver their products and services faster, optimize their performance, and improve the reliability of their services.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, and unfortunately, \u201cmany organizations are hesitant\ndue to the uncertainty of how to start with their cloud journey as well as the\nuncertainty of what benefits cloud will actually deliver to the business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And this uncertainty is one of the key issues about cloud\nadoption that MIS & IT Group has encountered in offering services with\nclients in the Philippines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another issue is data sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFree flow of data across the globe has been a remarkable\nfeature of the Internet that has resulted in technical efficiencies and reduced\ncosts. Cross-border data flows are estimated to have raised the world GDP by\n10.1%,\u201d Franco said. \u201cHowever, this lack of borders in the digital world has\ntested traditional notions of territoriality and sovereignty. Due to this, the\nrequirements for data localization or data residency has been rapidly evolving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Franco noted that a growing number of countries have been\nplacing restrictions on transfers and exchanges beyond territorial boundaries. \u201cTypically,\ndata localization laws either require that data be hosted on local servers or\nrestrict transfer of data outside national borders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Already, Data Localization Laws have been recently enforced in many countries including the following: Australia (for health records); Canada in Nova Scotia and British Columbia (public service providers and all personal data); China (personal, business and financial data); Germany (telecommunications metadata); India (Payment System Data); Indonesia (public services companies must maintain data centers in country); Kazakhstan (servers running on the country domain, .kz); Nigeria (all government data); Russia (all personal data); South Korea (geospatial and map data); and Vietnam (service providers usage data).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor some countries, including Malaysia and the Philippines,\nthough there are no data sovereignty laws, strict consent requirements and\nregulatory approvals for overseas data transfer exist,\u201d said Franco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also still an issue that affects cloud adoption in the\nPhilippines is cloud security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne major hindrance to widespread cloud adoption is\ncybersecurity. Many have the perception that moving to the cloud makes them\nprone to security threats and attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

o In the Philippines, it is unfortunate that our country is\nyet to mature in infrastructure as well as skills to address cybersecurity\nrisks,\u201d Franco said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps not surprisingly, In the Cloud Readiness Index 2018<\/em> presented by the Asia Cloud Computing\nAssociation, the Philippines remains to be one of the countries in the Asia\nPacific that have yet to mature in terms of cloud adoption. Out of 14 economies\nacross APAC, the Philippines landed on the 9th spot, falling behind South Korea\nand Malaysia, and ahead of Thailand, Indonesia, India, China and Vietnam. The\ntop three spots were occupied by Singapore, Hong Kong and New Zealand\nrespectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Franco, to make the journey to the cloud as smooth as\npossible, a hybrid cloud approach will be a good strategy. \u201cHybrid cloud is a\ncloud computing environment that uses a mix of on-premises, private cloud and\nthird-party, public cloud services with orchestration between the two\nplatforms,\u201d he said. \u201cUnfortunately, there are only a few local cloud providers\nthat may have the necessary experience, expertise and appropriate cloud\ninfrastructure to effectively assist companies in their cloud journey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Franco recognizes that \u201cin today\u2019s corporate environment in\nthe Philippines, it is highly likely that though decision-makers are exploring\nthe use of cloud, they may not yet be comfortable with having corporate or\ncompany data outside the Philippines. Hence, they explore engaging local cloud\nproviders,\u201d he said. \u201cOnce more, it is unfortunate that there are only a few\nlocal cloud providers that may have the necessary experience, expertise and\nappropriate cloud infrastructure to effectively provide a reliable local cloud\nfor data localization.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Globally \u2013 to address cybersecurity \u2013 reputable public cloud\nproviders such as Microsoft Azure or AWS have adopted security standards such\nas ISO 27001 which are trusted global security standards. ISO 27001 (formally\nknown as ISO\/IEC 27001:2005) is a specification for an information security\nmanagement system (ISMS) which is a framework of policies and procedures that\nincludes all legal, physical and technical controls involved in an\norganization\u2019s information risk management processes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUnfortunately, local cloud providers may not be as secure,\nrobust, and reliable compared to Azure and AWS,\u201d Franco said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To respond to these challenges, VST ECS Philippines, Inc is\nlaunching the first and only Azure Stack in the Philippines, offered on a\nsubscription basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
