{"id":35548,"date":"2019-06-12T14:47:47","date_gmt":"2019-06-12T06:47:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/?p=35548"},"modified":"2019-06-12T14:47:49","modified_gmt":"2019-06-12T06:47:49","slug":"stem-expo-gathers-enthusiasts-awards-contest-winners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/2019\/06\/12\/stem-expo-gathers-enthusiasts-awards-contest-winners\/","title":{"rendered":"STEM EXPO gathers enthusiasts, awards contest winners"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The\u00a0Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs\u00a0hosted the\u00a0Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Exposition\u00a0or\u00a0STEM EXPO in Taguig City.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the theme\u00a0<em>\u201cEmbracing Our Ingenuity, Engineering the Filipino Society,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0the STEM EXPO showcased the Filipino youth\u2019s excellence and ingenuity in the\u00a0<em>\u201ci-Gen: Ideas Generation Hackathon\u201d<\/em>\u00a0or i-Gen Ideathon,\u00a0<em>\u201ci-Gen: Innovations Competition\u201d<\/em>\u00a0or i-Gen: Innovation, PSYSC Investigatory Projects Fair, Robotics Olympiad, Science Journalism and Science Film Festival competitions. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saint Louis University-Laboratory Senior High School\u00a0topped the i-Gen: Ideathon competition with their project entitled\u00a0<em>\u201cRice Guardian,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0which also got the Best in Presentation and Best Presenter prizes. The same school bagged first runner-up for\u00a0<em>\u201ciOne\u201d<\/em>\u00a0while\u00a0Philippine Science High School-Cordillera Administrative Region\u00a0won second runner-up for\u00a0<em>\u201cAgmula.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, PSHS-CAR ruled the i-Gen: Innovation contest with\u00a0<em>&#8220;Wheelduino: An Arduino-Based Smart Wheelchair for Paraplegic Patients,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>followed by\u00a0Pasig City Science High School\u00a0and SLU-LSH.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Student researchers from the\u00a0PSHS-Main Campus\u00a0led the winners of the IP Fair with their project\u00a0<em>\u201cDevelopment of an iOS Application for Real-time Spectral Classification of Stars Based on a Convolutional Neutral Network,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0which was also awarded Best in Exhibit and Best Presenter. PSHS-CAR and\u00a0University of Baguio Science High School\u00a0ended up first and second runners-up, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other contests, PSHS-CAR dominated the Robotics Olympiad, which is both a robotics projects exhibition and competition aimed at promoting the field to young Filipino students and to the public.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Winning Best Picture, Best in Cinematography and Best in Musical Score in the Science Film Festival is\u00a0Tabaco National High School\u00a0with their film\u00a0<em>\u201cI Wonder Y,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0which emphasized the importance of S&amp;T in solving several issues in the country. Second Best Picture, Best Direction and Best Screenplay went to PSHS-CAR with\u00a0<em>\u201cSapantaha\u201d<\/em>\u00a0(Presumption), which highlights and promotes gender equality in S&amp;T.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event also featured an open conference series called\u00a0<em>\u201cTeknolohiya, Agham, Kalikasan, Diwa at Ako\u201d<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0TAKDA, which assembled scientists, academicians, researchers, business people, government officials, working professionals, and university students; an exhibition of science, technology, research, and development industry partners; and other activities that mainly cater to senior high school students.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keynote speaker and forensic scientist\u00a0Dr. Maria Corazon De Ungria\u00a0led the resource persons and workshop facilitators during the event. Among them are 2017 Breakthrough Junior Challenge winner\u00a0Hillary Diane Andales, Seaversity Innovations Chief Executive Officer\u00a0Engr. Ephrem Dela Cerna, Department of Trade and Industry-Bureau of Small and Medium Enterprise Development specialist\u00a0Michelle Maramag, Masungi Georeserve Foundation project manager\u00a0Ann Dumaliang, Haraya Learning Innovations founder\u00a0Engr. Paolo Espiritu, advocacy filmmaker and communicator\u00a0Seymour Sanchez, outdoor photographer\u00a0Gab Mejia, designer and social entrepreneur\u00a0Joie Cruz, and De La Salle University Electronics and Communications Engineering Department associate professor\u00a0Dr. Argel Bandala.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since its foundation in 1971, PSYSC has led the science clubbing movement and the promotion of S&amp;T and the environment to elementary and secondary students in the country.
