If we need \u201cproof\u201d that: 1. Consumerism is gonna be the end of us all; and\/or 2. We\u2019re not all as poor as we think after all, it\u2019s the support (or non-support, for that matter) of flagship units from mobile phone companies. After all, even in a country like the Philippines where many (MANY) workers still earn less than P10,000 a month, we have more than a handful of (extravagant) supporters of flagship phones that sell for more than P50,000; to be changed after a year\u2019s use by a unit that is even more expensive.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now here\u2019s what\u2019s comforting: With consumerism seemingly\nunstoppable, at least now we\u2019re seeing a lot (and I mean, a LOT) of smartphones\nthat have great features but can be had at midrange price points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A unit that comes to mind is realme\u2019s realme 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FIRST IMPRESSION\/LOOKS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

First off, the unit may sell from P6,990 to P9,990\n(depending on internal configurations), but\u2026 it doesn\u2019t look cheap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the right side of the lightweight unit, there is the power\nbutton (the only button there). At the left, you\u2019ll find the tray that houses\nthe triple card slot (two nano SIMs and a memory card) and the volume rocker. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the top, there\u2019s the noise-canceling microphone; and at\nthe bottom, you find the loudspeaker, 3.5mm audio port and the micro USB port (no\nUSB Type-C port here).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 13-megapixel, f\/2.0 shooter is tasked with taking selfies\non the front. Flipped, the phone has a dual camera at the back (13MP f\/1.8 +\n2MP f\/2.4 dual rear camera), as well as the fingerprint scanner.  There is a yellow outline on the main camera that\nmakes the unit look\u2026 classy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coming only in HD+, the unit has a 6.2-inch Dewdrop display (with\nthe notch that can\u2019t be hidden) with a resolution of 1520 x 720, equating to a\npixel density of 271. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At around 8.3mm thick, It has a polycarbonate unibody, with curves\nalong the sides of the back. Oh\u2026 there is a free jelly case in the box,\nnecessary because this is a smudge magnet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forget the audio on this one; at full blast, there\u2019s that \u201clata\u201d (tin can) quality. Try using a good earphone\/speaker to best enjoy the sound from this unit instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UNDER THE HOOD<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

realme 3 runs on the ColorOS 6.0 based on Android 9 Pie. Battery\ncapacity is 4,230mAh, more than enough to last you a day (even YouTub-ing). And\nwith pre-installed apps from Google, you\u2019d likely get (just) 50GB of usable\nspace out of 64GB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By default, and akin to so many units out in the market now\n(e.g. Nokia immediately came to mind; dunno why), there\u2019s an app drawer that can\nbe accessed by swiping from the bottom of the screen. Other features include: a\nSmart Assistant, and a Smart Bar feature (to immediately access specific apps).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are two ways to open the unit \u2013 i.e. via the round\nfingerprint reader at the back, and face unlock via the phone\u2019s selfie camera.\nAt least when checked, both are fast and accurate (and for the latter, even in\nlower light). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For pic-taking, realme 3 has a portrait mode, AI Beauty,\nPanorama, Expert, Timelapse and slow-mo, making it (at its price) worth\nconsidering by pic greedy users. And tested, the pics by realme 3 aren\u2019t bad,\nparticularly in daylight. For shoots in the dark, it has the Nightscape mode (a.k.a.\nNight Mode) as well as Chroma Boost (supposedly to boost the photo\u2019s saturation\nto make it look more vibrant). These help make the pics taken at night suffice\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Video-wise, it can shoot up to 1080p at 30fps, decent for (shorter)\nB rolls when you left your cam at home and need to shoot wherever you may be\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

realme 3 is powered by the MediaTek Helio P60 chipset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IN THE END<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, you may have your doubts because \u2013 I get this part \u2013\nrealme isn\u2019t exactly an established brand yet (or at least not as established\nas, say, Huawei or Samsung or Apple). And except for their novelty, new\nbrands\/products will almost always be plagued by this notion of \u201cnot perfect\nyet\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But here\u2019s the thing, at least with realme 3, considering\nthe asking price, this is actually not a shabby offering. No, this isn\u2019t as\ntacky-looking\/appearing as, say, Cherry Mobile. But it isn\u2019t as classy as, say,\nthe offerings (particularly the higher-end models) of Apple, Samsung or Huawei.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the asking price of this not-mediocre-unit-at all can\u2019t be stressed enough. The variants sell for: 3GB + 32GB \u2013 PHP 6,990; 3GB + 64GB \u2013 PHP 7,990; 4GB + 64GB \u2013 PHP 9,990.
