{"id":34669,"date":"2019-03-20T15:33:56","date_gmt":"2019-03-20T07:33:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/?p=34669"},"modified":"2019-03-20T15:42:50","modified_gmt":"2019-03-20T07:42:50","slug":"bsa-gop-eye-to-educate-corporate-end-users-about-benefits-of-legalized-software-assets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/2019\/03\/20\/bsa-gop-eye-to-educate-corporate-end-users-about-benefits-of-legalized-software-assets\/","title":{"rendered":"BSA, GOP eye to educate corporate end-users about benefits of legalized software assets"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>BSA and the Philippine government are teaming up to help business leaders address the ongoing issues related to the use of unlicensed software in the country.\u00a0 Coming on the heels of a public notice shared by the Philippines\u2019 Optical Media Board (OMB) earlier this week urging companies and individuals to stop using unlicensed software, BSA is launching \u201cLegalize &amp; Protect\u201d, a campaign that aims to reach tens of thousands of business leaders with messages about the legal, productivity and security benefits of using licensed software. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BSA suggests that thousands of companies in the Philippines continue to utilize unlicensed software assets, posing\nserious business and security risks. BSA also suggests that as a result of the\ncampaign, thousands of companies will legalize their various software products,\nmoving from unlicensed and insecure software to legal software assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday is all about legalizing software use and protecting\ncompanies from the dangers of unlicensed software,\u201d said BSA Senior Director\nTarun Sawney. \u201cOur goal is to help business leaders understand the imperative\nto legalize and recognize that investing in licensed software is good for their\nsecurity, good for corporate reputation, good for corporate productivity and\ngood for their bottom line.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BSA is working with governments in major ASEAN markets to\nhelp the business communities understand the economic benefits of using legal\nsoftware. According to IDC, businesses gain an average increase in profits of\nup to 11 percent based on legalized software assets. As a matter of national\ncompetitiveness, government leaders are encouraging the business community to\nconvert to legal assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For its part, the OMB recognizes the importance of addressing\nthe growing concerns on unlicensed software use among businesses, and has vowed\nto continue its sustained and concerted crackdown to ensure compliance. \u201cWe\nrecognize that companies using legal software perform better, protect data\nbetter and bring more benefits to our country,\u201d said Atty. Anselmo Adriano,\nChairman and CEO, OMB. \u201cGood and profitable corporations must legalize their\nsoftware assets to protect the interests of their clients, their data and\nultimately the health of their business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BSA is launching the \u201cLegalize &amp; Protect\u201d campaign this\nweek in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Earlier, BSA launched a similar\ncampaign in cooperation with the Vietnamese government with positive results.\nCompanies targeted in the campaign are in a wide range of industries including,\nbut not limited to, manufacturing, IT, finance, professional services,\nconstruction, healthcare, consumer goods, engineering, architecture, and\ndesign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the months ahead, BSA will launch public education efforts\nto ensure business leaders are aware of the risks of using unlicensed\nsoftware.&nbsp; This will include marketing,\ncommunications, social media content and in some cases, direct appeals to\nbusinesses to legalize their software assets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Asia Pacific region has the highest rate of unlicensed software use in the world at 57 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around the world, CIOs are finding unlicensed software is increasingly risky and expensive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organizations\nnow face a one-in-three chance of encountering malware when they obtain or\ninstall an unlicensed software package or buy a computer with unlicensed\nsoftware on it.&nbsp; Each malware attack can cost a company US$2.4 million on\naverage and can take up to 50 days to resolve. To the extent that the infection\nleads to company downtime or lost business data, it can also seriously affect\nthe company\u2019s brand and reputation. The cost for dealing with malware that is\nassociated with unlicensed software is growing too.
