{"id":33163,"date":"2018-09-19T15:32:09","date_gmt":"2018-09-19T07:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/?p=33163"},"modified":"2018-09-19T15:36:24","modified_gmt":"2018-09-19T07:36:24","slug":"women-dominate-top-level-management-in-ph-e-commerce-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/2018\/09\/19\/women-dominate-top-level-management-in-ph-e-commerce-sector\/","title":{"rendered":"Women dominate overall top-level management in PH e-commerce sector"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bolstering the role of women in the workplace has become a global issue as gender inequality continues to be a critical economic challenge.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The population of women accounts for about half of the world\u2019s working-age population, yet women are less likely to be given opportunities for\u00a0economic\u00a0participation. \u201cIf every country matched the progress toward gender parity of its fastest-improving neighbour, global GDP could increase by up to $12 trillion in 2025.\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/employment-and-growth\/how-advancing-womens-equality-can-add-12-trillion-to-global-growth\">McKinsey Global Institute 2018 Report.<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In Asia Pacific, targeted policies to address gender inequality could fuel an additional $4.5 trillion to the region\u2019s combined annual gross domestic product by 2025, or 12 percent better than if the status quo were maintained. The Philippines, APAC\u2019s most gender-equal country, is projected to expand by as much as $40 billion by 2025 if it can bring more poor and less-educated women into the workforce.<\/p>\n<p>As more and more businesses continue to shift\/integrate technology, iPrice Group analysed the <a href=\"https:\/\/iprice.ph\/trends\/insights\/gender-diversity-management-philippines-e-commerce\/\">top-level management of PH&#8217;s biggest e-commerce<\/a> players to understand the extend of gender diversity in a market-specific industry. The aim of the study is to determine if there is gender diversity or gender inequality for each career levels: C-Levels, Senior Vice President, Vice President and Heads. Our study finds that women hold more positions in the overall top-level management while senior roles: SVP and C-Suite are more common in men. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-19-at-3.23.29-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33164\" src=\"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-19-at-3.23.29-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"878\" height=\"898\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-19-at-3.23.29-PM.png 878w, http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-19-at-3.23.29-PM-293x300.png 293w, http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-19-at-3.23.29-PM-768x785.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 878px) 100vw, 878px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After examining the <a href=\"https:\/\/iprice.ph\/insights\/mapofecommerce\/en\/\">Philippines\u2019 biggest e-commerce<\/a> players (based from iPrice Group Map of E-commerce findings), women dominate the overall top-level management positions by only 10%.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The population of women comprise an average of 55 percent\u00a0in the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Philippine e-commerce top-level management, surpassing the global average standard of 24 percent (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantthornton.co.uk\/news-centre\/women-in-business-report-2018\/\">based from Grant Thornton research 2018<\/a>).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/reports\/the-global-gender-gap-report-2017\">Global Gender Gap Index<\/a>, Philippines has consistently performed as one of the most gender-equal workplace in the world. Philippines took the helm in South East Asia with the most number of women in leadership, technical and professional roles. Additionally, the country scored higher\u00a0than <a href=\"https:\/\/ipricethailand.com\/%25E0%25B9%2580%25E0%25B8%2597%25E0%25B8%25A3%25E0%25B8%2599%25E0%25B8%2594\/insights\/%25E0%25B8%258A%25E0%25B8%25B2%25E0%25B8%25A2-vs-%25E0%25B8%25AB%25E0%25B8%258D%25E0%25B8%2587-%25E0%25B9%2583%25E0%25B8%2584%25E0%25B8%25A3%25E0%25B8%2581%25E0%25B8%2599%25E0%25B9%2581%25E0%25B8%2599%25E0%25B8%2597%25E0%25B8%2584%25E0%25B8%25A3%25E0%25B8%25AD%25E0%25B8%2587%25E0%25B8%259A%25E0%25B8%25A5%25E0%25B8%25A5%25E0%25B8%2587%25E0%25B8%2581%25E0%25B8%259C%25E0%25B8%259A%25E0%25B8%25A3%25E0%25B8%25AB%25E0%25B8%25B2%25E0%25B8%25A3%25E0%25B8%25A3%25E0%25B8%25B0%25E0%25B8%2594%25E0%25B8%259A%25E0%25B8%25AA%25E0%25B8%2587%25E0%25B9%2583%25E0%25B8%2599%25E0%25B9%2584%25E0%25B8%2597%25E0%25B8%25A2\">Thailand<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/iprice.sg\/trends\/insights\/gender-diversity-management-singapore-e-commerce\/\">Singapore<\/a>, countries that fall\u00a0into the upper middle-income to high-income\u00a0group.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>From its last year\u2019s report, Philippines slipped three notches to 10th place, partly due to its performance drop on wage equality, health and survival gender gap. The nation fared well in the political empowerment of women specifically on women handling managerial and executive positions and labour force participation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The rationale for these findings is\u00a0in the general upward mobility of\u00a0women in the Philippines which makes its\u00a0talent pool robust. For instance, the country\u2019s legislature, <a href=\"https:\/\/psa.gov.ph\/content\/q-magna-carta-women-republic-act-no-9710\">Magna\u00a0Carta of Women Act in 2009<\/a> promotes gender\u00a0equality in government by mandating quotas for the\u00a0proportion of women in government jobs. The same legislature has encouraged the private sector to follow although it stops short of\u00a0mandated quotas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-19-at-3.23.42-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33165\" src=\"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-19-at-3.23.42-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"856\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-19-at-3.23.42-PM.png 856w, http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-19-at-3.23.42-PM-300x280.png 300w, http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-19-at-3.23.42-PM-768x718.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 856px) 100vw, 856px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite that the women population in the workplace dominates men, the population became increasingly male in senior roles: C-levels and SVP-level (Senior Vice President) roles. \u00a0The percentage of men and women in SVP-level are 56 percent and 44 percent respectively. Meanwhile for C-levels, the percentage of men and women are 79 percent and 21 percent respectively. The men population lead is 14 percent for SVP-level and 58 percent for C-Levels. In general, the results suggest that gender gap continues to widen substantially higher up the managerial career ladder.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Based from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pids.gov.ph\/pids-in-the-news\/2142\">Philippine Institute for Development Studies<\/a> (PIDS) research, the traditional gender role that \u201cwomen are homemakers\u201d and \u201cmen are providers\u201d have influenced the gender inequality for women employees\u2019 chances of breaking into the labour market. Moreover, this backward mentality of \u201cwomen nurture, and their advantages are in housework,\u201d while \u201cmen provide, and their place is in the labour market,\u201d have led to discrimination against women who aspire for career, according to the authors of the paper, Connie Bayudan-Dacuycuy and Lawrence Dacuycuy.<\/p>\n<p>Another rationale to our findings is that more career women tend to sacrifice their jobs for family life. The share of \u201copt-out\u201d moms (those who are highly educated, high-achieving women) who choose to stay at home in order to care for their family rose to 29 percent in 2012, from its 23 percent low in 1999, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewsocialtrends.org\/2014\/04\/08\/after-decades-of-decline-a-rise-in-stay-at-home-mothers\/#fn-18853-1\">Pew Research Center report<\/a>. While the study covers the US population, it validates that the existing gender role dilemma (in the workplace) is a global status quo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-19-at-3.23.50-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33166\" src=\"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-19-at-3.23.50-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"878\" height=\"784\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-19-at-3.23.50-PM.png 878w, http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-19-at-3.23.50-PM-300x268.png 300w, http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Screen-Shot-2018-09-19-at-3.23.50-PM-768x686.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 878px) 100vw, 878px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While the population distribution became increasingly male in senior roles, women hold more roles in the VP-level and Head-level. The percentage of men and women in Head-level are 38 percent and 62 percent respectively. For VP-level, the percentage of men and women are 47 percent and 53 percent respectively. Hence, there are more women in VP-level and Head-level by 6 percent and 24 percent which is particularly smaller than the lead of men in SVP-level and C-Levels. Meanwhile, there is a positive result in SVP-level and VP-level as the distribution of men and women stand close with only 14 percent and 6 percent difference.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Overall, the plan in achieving women\u2019s economic empowerment (to address gender gap in the workplace) has a strong global framework with dedicated economic programs such as adoption of the 2030 Agenda, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda and the 10-year review of the World Summit on Information Society.
