{"id":2925,"date":"2013-11-13T12:51:47","date_gmt":"2013-11-13T04:51:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/?p=2925"},"modified":"2013-11-13T12:57:48","modified_gmt":"2013-11-13T04:57:48","slug":"scam-email-takes-advantage-situation-typhoon-hit-areas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/2013\/11\/13\/scam-email-takes-advantage-situation-typhoon-hit-areas\/","title":{"rendered":"Scam email takes advantage of situation in typhoon-hit areas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Spammers have started taking advantage of the situation in the Philippines&#8217; Yolanda-ravaged areas by sending email containing fake donation requests, according to Symantec Corp.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/haiyan-scam-email.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2926\" alt=\"haiyan scam email\" src=\"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/haiyan-scam-email.png\" width=\"600\" height=\"376\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/haiyan-scam-email.png 600w, http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/haiyan-scam-email-300x188.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the the example shown above, the spammer has sent an email that seems perfectly fine at first glance, but when you take a closer look, you can see the email is sent from a different email ID with the subject line &#8220;HELP PHILIPPINES&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The spammer disguises himself as a professional anchor and reporter for a reputable news channel. The organization seems to be helping impacted victims from the affected parts of the Philippines. The spammer also speaks about transferring funds through a reputable bank. He provides another email ID, which is created using a free email service provider, for further correspondence. The overall feel and content of the email is presented in a very genuine and polite manner so that recipients won&#8217;t notice that it&#8217;s actual a scam.<\/p>\n<p>Symantec recommends the following precautions in order to avoid such scams:<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Be extra vigilant while opening unsolicited emails<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Verify the authenticity of the organization to whom you are transferring donations<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Do not respond to emails that ask for personal and confidential information<\/p>\n<p>Symantec also recommends updating anti-spam signatures regularly.
