{"id":21266,"date":"2016-01-11T11:00:55","date_gmt":"2016-01-11T03:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/?p=21266"},"modified":"2016-02-02T18:28:19","modified_gmt":"2016-02-02T10:28:19","slug":"kaspersky-predicts-end-of-the-world-for-apts-as-we-know-them-this-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/2016\/01\/11\/kaspersky-predicts-end-of-the-world-for-apts-as-we-know-them-this-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Kaspersky predicts end of the world for APTs as we know them this 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) as they are now\u00a0known will cease to exist in 2016, replaced by deeper, embedded attacks that are harder to detect and trace back to the perpetrators, according to Kaspersky Lab experts. \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Kaspersky.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21267\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21267\" src=\"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Kaspersky.jpg\" alt=\"Kaspersky\" width=\"620\" height=\"445\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Kaspersky.jpg 620w, http:\/\/www.upgrademag.com\/web\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Kaspersky-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In their <a href=\"https:\/\/securelist.com\/analysis\/kaspersky-security-bulletin\/72771\/kaspersky-security-bulletin-2016-predictions\" target=\"_blank\">predictions for 2016<\/a>, experts revealed that while the \u2018Threat\u2019 will remain, the concept of \u2018Advanced\u2019 and \u2018Persistent\u2019 will disappear to reduce the traces left behind on an infected system.\u00a0 They will also rely more on off-the-shelf malware to minimize their initial investment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Kaspersky Lab\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/securelist.com\/analysis\/kaspersky-security-bulletin\/72771\/kaspersky-security-bulletin-2016-predictions\" target=\"_blank\">predictions for 2016<\/a> are based on the expertise of the Global Research and Analysis Team, the company\u2019s 42 top security experts, located all over the world.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Each member contributes unique expertise and, in 2015 alone, their insight and intelligence resulted in detailed public reports on 12 APT actors, \u201cspeaking\u201d different languages, including French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, English, among others. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Kaspersky Lab\u2019s experts anticipate that 2016 will see:\u00a0<\/span>APTs lose letters and gain weight as there will be a dramatic change in how APTs are structured and operate;\u00a0a decreased emphasis on \u2018persistence\u2019, with a greater focus on memory-resident or fileless malware, reducing the traces left on an infected system and thereby avoiding detection; and rather than investing in bootkits, rootkits and custom malware that gets burned by research teams, an increase in the repurposing of off-the-shelf malware.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Experts also predict that t<span style=\"color: #000000;\">hieves in the TV and\/or crime in the coffee-maker as ransomware will gain ground on banking Trojans and is expected to extend into new areas such as OS X devices, often owned by wealthier and therefore more lucrative targets, in addition to mobile and the Internet-of-Things; n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ew ways to make hack victims\u00a0pay with alternative payment systems such as ApplePay and AndroidPay, as well as stock exchanges will become growing targets for financial cyber-attack; and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">a rise in the number of DOXing, public shaming and extortion attacks, as everyone from Hactivists to nation-states embraced the strategic dumping of private pictures, information, customer lists, and code to shame their targets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c2016 will see significant evolution in cyberespionage tradecraft, as sophisticated threat actors minimize investment by repurposing commercially available malware and become more adept at hiding their advanced tools, infrastructure, and identities by ditching persistence altogether,\u201d said Juan Andr\u00e9s Guerrero-Saade, Senior Security Expert, Global Research and Analysis Team, Kaspersky Lab. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Juan Andr\u00e9s Guerrero-Saade added that \u201c2016 will also see more players entering the world of cyber-crime. The profitability of cyber-attacks is indisputable and more people want a share of the spoils. As mercenaries enter the game, an elaborate outsourcing industry has risen to meet the demands for new malware and even entire operations.
