<\/b>James Walker, president of the CloudEthernet Forum (CEF), has announced the CEF\u2019s key appointments, goals and technical objectives for its first year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jeffrey Schmitz,\u00a0c<\/i>hief marketing officer, Spirent Communications plc is appointed chairman. Five new members were welcomed at the Forum\u2019s first quarterly meeting in Montreal. Two technical co-chairs have been appointed \u2013 Sam Youn, director network architecture, Equinix and Mike Bencheck, Verizon Fellow \u2013 plus two marketing co-chairs to direct the Forum\u2019s outreach and education strategy: Henry Bohannon, senior director, head of Ethernet product management, Tata Communications and Doug Wills, senior director, product marketing and management, Juniper Networks.<\/p>\n

\u201cGiven the high quality of CTOs and technical leaders we have already attracted to the CloudEthernet Forum, I feel we have created a winning team of C-level business leaders\u201d said Walker. \u201cI am now confident we have the experience, skills and commitment to make significant progress in resolving the industry\u2019s most pressing issues around cloud computing\u201d.<\/p>\n

The CloudEthernet Forum \u2013 launched on May 23rd<\/sup> at a high profile event to celebrate 40 years of Ethernet Innovation \u2013 attracted immediate interest for addressing one of the hottest issues to emerge from the current surge in Cloud uptake, namely the need for scaling and enhancing Ethernet technology to meet the stringent demands of delivering cloud services.<\/p>\n

Eleven founding members \u2013 Alcatel-Lucent, Avaya, Citrix, Equinix, HP, Huawei, Juniper, PCCW Global, Spirent, Tata Communications and Verizon \u2013 have already been joined by Ciena, Coresite, Cyan, Ericsson and Telx. There is agreement about the need to attract more end-users to balance the strong NEM presence with the recruitment of large scale cloud service providers and their enterprise customers.<\/p>\n

The first task of the technical committee will be to complete, by the end of September, an initial White Paper outlining the key issues to be addressed, including: cloud types, deterministic traffic performance, end-to-end provisioning, overlay tunnels, and provisioning resources.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are market driven \u2013 customers are asking for solutions\u201d explains Walker. \u201cCloud is growing even quicker than people thought it would, so we need to get answers fast.\u201d<\/p>\n

The CEF\u2019s forthcoming activities will include regional meetings for \u00a0EMEA (Nice, France, September 25th<\/sup>) and APAC (Singapore, November 19th<\/sup>) as well as CEF activities at relevant industry events. The next members quarterly meeting will be held in Seattle, USA on October 24th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n
